about

In Villa Mella, a centuries-old Afro-Dominican brotherhood protects a
musical genre known as congo , played for elaborate funeral rites. In this
song, Palotré mixes the congo rhythms with snaking guitar lines influenced
by Congolese soukous music, drawing a musical line between the
Dominican Republic and Central Africa. It’s worth noting that Dominican
congo music includes the maracas, an indigenous instrument from before
the arrival of the Spanish.
