about

Inspired by the style of the late Dominican roots-fusion legend Luis Días,
this song is a bluesy take on a precursor of merengue known as pri-pri or
merengue de palo echao —especially as played in the roots-rich
neighborhood of Villa Mella. The style features the distinctive sound of the
balsié , a kind of Dominican talking drum in which the player changes the
pitch of the drum by pressing their foot into the drum’s head as they play.
This rendition is in honor of Heriberto Germán Vargas, better known as
"Nisito", one of the first accordion players who recorded in the genre.
